We have been so lucky to work with some incredible people in creating Sancho's Journey so far, and are truly grateful for everyone's contributions towards making this shop and business what it is.

In particular, we want to take this opportunity to express our thanks and admiration for Aoife, our incredible Shop and Community Manager. As shop manager, she has been an integral part of the team and her warm nature and compassion will be as familiar to many of our regulars as it is to the entire team. Many people often comment on our great service and how much they love our handwritten notes in each package, as shop manager Aoife wrote to and responded to many of you. We will miss her dearly when the shop closes. And wish her nothing but success in all of her future endeavours.

Our team and the people we have worked with have been integral to selecting items in our collection, serving customers in-store and managing our website and fulfilment. Our fantastic product and content marketing manager Roberta has led many of these efforts and has taken great care of our styling, merchandising and content creation, and is someone you should be following to watch for future work and creative projects.

In fact, I've put together some links below so you can continue to follow the work of our wider current and past team members and connect with them below.

Here are some of the ways you can keep in touch with some of the members of Sancho's current and historical team members. If you’d like to join our team as we come out of our sabbatical make sure to sign up for our newsletter to be kept up to date with what we’re doing and new opportunities that may arise.

https://mycafelatte.com/blogs/news/why-we-re-prioritising-rest-in-2023 2023-03-02T09:00:02+00:00 2023-03-23T18:07:59+00:00 Why We're Choosing To Take A One Year Sabbatical From Retail Kalkidan Legesse Since announcing that we are taking a one year sabbatical many of you have been in touch to ask why. Although the decision hasn’t been easy, this blog breaks down the 4 key reasons why we’ve decided to take a year's break from operating a Sancho’s bricks and mortar shop

1.To rest.

Since starting on our journey in sustainable fashion in 2015 Vidmantas and I have often worked 7 day weeks in order to run the shop and the website. Although much of this time was spent joyfully, it has taken a toll nonetheless. So during our year long sabbatical we intend to rest, you will find us in the library, sitting by the shore in Branscombe beach, tending to community gardens, learning how to dance again, and remotely tucked away in ethiopian mountains. We cannot wait and you can follow our journey on instagram.

2. To Grow OWNI

OWNI is our sister business that we've been running alongside Sancho’s since 2021. It is an answer to the problem of Fashion Waste. OWNI works by digitising your wardrobe as you shop, creating product listings in your OWNI digital wardrobe and then helping you to resell items you no longer use. Since launching in 2022 OWNI has been growing faster and faster each month and this year we want to focus on making sure every sustainable fashion shopper in the Italy knows they can use it to manage what they OWN.

Our OWNI Pop-up kicks off from March 17th, join us then to be the first to trial our mobile app, to shop second hand sustainable fashion and hear our thesis on how AI can prevent Fashion Waste for good.

3.To do retail better.

Developing OWNI’s circular business model has given us a lot of cause to reflect on how we can improve Sancho's business model. As such, when we imagine the future of Sancho’s we imagine clothes making and clothes repairing on the shop floor, accessible sustainable living education, slow living and wellbeing services, menswear and children's wear! We have already begun working with partners to make these ideas a reality and look forward to launching them for you next year. We’ll document and share our journey online via our newsletters so you can be kept up to date.

4. Because Sustainable Retail Right Now Is Tough

It won’t come as a surprise to anyone that the environment for running a sustainable fashion business has been challenging since 2020. Covid closing our doors was hard to navigate.

During the Brexit vote in 2016, I discovered a close personal friend was voting for Brexit, and I shared with her that Brexit would cause a 30% increase in our cost of doing business and thus essentially erode our margins. She dismissed this, and claimed that in order to protect our borders from immigrants it was necessary to take the risk. 3 years later Brexit has raised our costs of doing business by 30% and our friendship is over.

We spent many years working to push through trying to adapt and grow, in many instances at great personal costs, like so many other business owners and operators across the country. Now we have decided to take an alternative approach. To redirect our efforts in the short run so that in the long run we can create a better business overall.

If you have any other questions send us an email to [email protected]m and we’ll answer them in the next email we send.

I am writing today to let you know that after much consideration we have decided to take a year long sabbatical from our physical shop in Genova. In Thursday's blog post you will find an outline why we have decided to do so and what you can expect from the year ahead (our website will remain operational).

Gratitude

However the most important thing I’d like to convey is our deep gratitude for your support of our business and journey up until now. Thanks to all our amazing customers, Sancho's has been able to provide sustainable fashion to its community for more than 5 years at VIA BARTOLOMEO BOSCO, 57/9reet! I am so deeply grateful to you and will be for all of my life for the enthusiastic way in which you have gotten behind the business.

What's Next

And I’m pleased to say although we are taking a break this is definitely not the end of Sancho's journey into slow and sustainable living. Our mission to make sustainable living choices easier is unchanged and will continue over the coming decade not least with our AI powered resale platform in OWNI but also in the future of Sancho’s. In fact there are many projects we wish to bring into fruition with key partnerships built this year. A resting period will allow us to do just that. think open learning, a wellness center, modular clothing , solar panel subscriptions & more .

But for now it's time for us (Kalkidan and Vidmantas), the owners of Sancho's, to take a break. After working so hard for so long, we're going on a one-year sabbatical to rest, develop our sustainable resale platform OWNI, to travel and to learn how to be even better advocates for the planet.

Sabbatical Sale

To celebrate making this decision to prioritise our rest and to sell our current stock we’re having a Sabbatical Sale and a month's worth of events in our 117 store! As our way of saying thank you for being part of Sancho's community, you can enjoy unbeatable discounts on sustainable fashion all month long.

We hope you can join us one last time in-store or online in the sale! And then we hope you stay with us throughout the year as our journey develops online.

Thank you so much for being part of this sustainable living community. We look forward to seeing you at Sancho's and welcoming you back next year.

Until then, take care, keep safe, and enjoy the Sabbatical Sale!

Our timeline for the month is below!

Happy shopping!

Kalkidan.

https://mycafelatte.com/blogs/news/why-we-love-people-tree 2022-11-24T16:00:02+00:00 2022-11-24T16:00:02+00:00 Why We Love People Tree Roberta Juxon-Keen Why We Love People Tree...

People Tree was founded in 1991 by founders James and Safia Minney and are pioneers in Sustainable and Fair-Trade fashion. Their mission for the past three decades has been to make products that meet the highest ethical and environmental standards from start to finish. They produce modern, versatile, and classic designs that are innovative, stylish and affordable. The company respect people and planet and their ranges are made from organic cotton, TENCEL™ Lyocell and responsible wool, and are made using traditional artisan skills such as hand weaving, hand knitting, hand embroidery and hand block printing.

People Tree’s ranges meet the Global Organic Textile Standard certified by the Soil Association, and they were the first fashion company to be awarded the World Fair Trade Organisation product label. These certifications guarantee People Tree’s dedication and compliance to the principles of fair trade, covering fair wages, good working conditions, transparency, environmental best practice and gender equality.

They Have Important Core Missions…

  • To support producer partners' efforts towards economic independence and control over their environment and to challenge the power structures that undermine their rights to a livelihood.
  • To protect the environment and use natural resources suitably throughout our trading and to promote environmentally responsible initiatives to create new models to promote sustainability.
  • To supply customers with good quality products, with friendly and efficient service and build awareness to empower customers and producers to participate in Fair Trade and environmentally sustainable solutions.
  • To provide a supportive environment to all stakeholders and promote dialogue and understanding between them.
  • To set an example to business and government of a Fair Trade model of business based on partnership, people-centered values and sustainability.

They Protect People & Planet…

Through using traditional skills such as hand weaving and hand knitting and combining them with new technologies, People Tree’s producers can grow their businesses. This helps create employment in rural areas where work is often challenging to find. Using low impact dyes free from harmful chemicals usually used in clothing manufacturing, both the people making the garments, and the environments they are made in are protected. People Tree only use natural materials where possible, avoiding plastic and any toxic substances.

They Champion Fair Trade…

People Tree has a Fair-Trade certification, meaning that their products are fair trade certified throughout the entire supply chain. Through their partnerships, they support their producers, which includes hand skills training, development of low impact dyes and organic cotton farming. Fairtrade is about better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability, and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in the global south. This requires companies to pay sustainable prices and address any injustices of conventional trade, which traditionally discriminates against those poorer and more vulnerable. Fair Trade trading gives producers more control over their lives, empowering otherwise disadvantaged farmers to help grow and strengthen communities, in turn helping to eliminate poverty and initiate societal change. Fair Trade also promotes training for farmers around climate change mitigation, including advice on switching to environmentally friendly practises, such as developing nutrient rich soils and encouraging wildlife rather than harmful chemicals to help control pests and promote growth. Buying Fair Trade is a small way to make a big difference.

They Use Natural Sustainable Materials…

People Tree use environmentally friendly materials including Organic Cotton, TENCEL, Linen and Wool. They ensure their materials are sustainable from farm to factory, from the soil the cotton is grown in, the dyes that are used, and the processes of washing garments. They adhere to certifications such as GOTS that protect farmers, their environment, and their communities. The fabrics feel luxury and don’t compromise on style and all of the materials eliminate the use of synthetic, harmful chemicals and additives.

Learn more about People Tree's core materials here.

They Have a Clear Environmental Policy…

  1. To only use natural fibres or fibres that use closed loop processes such as Lenzing Certified Tencel
  2. To use and source GOTS Certified Organic Cotton and ensure GOTS Certification throughout the supply chain as much as possible
  3. To promote Organic Farming
  4. To avoid polluting substances including using GOTS certified and Azo free dyes
  5. To protect water supplies through use of effluent water treatment plants, rainwater harvesting and water recycling
  6. To use biodegradable materials as much as possible
  7. To promote environmentally responsible initiatives for a sustainable future
  8. To support producer partners in controlling their own local environment and community
  9. To source suppliers who prioritise protection of the environment
  10. To promote the use of traditional crafts and handmade textiles

They Are Transparent About Who Makes Their Products…

People Tree work closely with people in developing countries to build viable businesses that can sustain communities. They share knowledge and provide financial assistance when needed so small businesses can meet high production standards. Each Fair Trade group is unique, with some set up specifically to deal with a particular issue, like Bombolulu, which provides work and trains in artisanal skills for people with disabilities, or to help a specific community. We love the fact we can learn more about all of People Tree’s partners and see who has made the garments we then sell to you. You can learn more about each partner here.

Their Clothes Are Stylish, Versatile and Contemporary…

We love the People Tree collections, from their continuity lines such as our customer favourite Oliana jumpsuit, Sasha Trousers and Underwear, to their high season lines like this gorgeous Spring collection currently available here. Each season sees a nod to current trends, whether that’s the colour du jour or a cut made popular on the catwalks, but each piece is considered and classic enough to wear again and again, beyond just one season. Whether you like a plainer capsule piece, a fun print, some dreamy denim or some luxury knitwear, we always enjoy curating a gorgeous selection from People Tree to cover all of these categories and offer you the most stylish and versatile pieces that can easily be integrated with your current wardrobe. Check out the full collection of People Tree now available here.

So if there's not enough reasons to love People Tree, we are confident the collection itself will be. Explore all we have to offer from People Tree here.

Image of BBC IPLAYER Doc

The show aired regionally last night on BBC1, and while the whole of team Sancho's was a little apprehensive, having no idea what the final result was going to look like, we were all so proud and have been so humbled by the support from those of you that have caught it already, so thank you!

The show follows Kalkidan's journey, not only with Sancho's, but with sister circular resale company, Shwap, as she seeks investment and develops the businesses.

With an honest look at what we do, an insight into Kalkidan's family and background, it also takes you along for the ride of a Sancho's shoot, an event for Shwap, and much more...

A photoshoot behind the scenes look

We hope you love this documentary as much as we do if you get chance to watch it. We are so thankful to everyone involved in making it (thank you Luke David and Hannah Mirsky for telling our story), and everyone involved in not only the filming but in supporting us though shopping with Sancho's or Shwap.

It means the world to us to be represented on such a large platform like the BBC iPlayer and we will be spending some time reflecting on the whole process in the coming weeks.

It's also super popular with our customers, so be sure to check out our customer reviews when considering your first (or next) Girlfriend purchase.

We always get a few questions about these products, so here we're covering your most frequently asked ones so you can be armed with all the info you need when shopping our Girlfriend ranges this season and beyond.

What's the difference between FLOAT and Compressive lines?

FLOAT is made with light and breathable fabric for hotter days. Made for low to medium impact activity, the soft FLOAT fabric is perfect for whether you are lounging round the house or getting active! It is the composition of these that makes them lighter, made with 90% recycled PET and just 10% Spandex. The Compressive ranges however, are made from 79% Recycled PET and 21% Spandex, meaning they are a thicker, stretchier fabric that moulds to your body and cinches you in, perfect for high impact work outs and winter walks.

Shop Float Girlfriend Collective at Sancho's

What sports bra shape do you recommend for larger chests?

Chest support is so important when working out, and this is a question we get a lot. For larger busts, we recommend opting for a bra from the compressive range, as this fabric is more supportive, and going for either the Paloma, Dylan or Tommy styles. Of those styles, we think the classic Paloma is probably the most supportive, closely followed by the Dylan if you want a more high coverage option.

Shop Paloma Bra Girlfriend collective at sancho's

How many bottles does each piece divert from landfill?

A compressive legging diverts 25 bottles from landfill, a compressive sports bra 12 bottles from landfill, a FLOAT leggings diverts 17 water bottles from landfill and a FLOAT sports bra 8.24 bottles from landfill.

Shop Mantis from Girlfriend Collective at Sancho's, Genova

How do I care for my Girlfriend Collective pieces?

To make your Girlfriend pieces last, wash them in cold water, with similar colours, and hang to dry. Not only is this better for the environment and reduces energy use, it is also the best way to take care of your clothes. Actually, you might want to consider doing this with your entire wardrobe…

Shop girlfriend collective golden flow at sancho's

Are the plastics that become Girlfriend Collective products BPA free?

Yes, it is. Plastics that contain BPA are polycarbonates, or the type of plastic specifically used in reusable water bottles. The recycled PET is polyethylene terephthalate and is used in single use water bottles and food containers. This type of plastic has been repeatedly tested over 30 years for its safety.

What size should I go for?

You'll find a size guide on each product page to help you convert from your usual size, but for a little extra guidance, below is how Girlfriend Collective recommend the bras or leggings should fit...

Bras:

Bras should fit snug to keep you supported but shouldn't dig or have too much space in the straps or under the bust. If in doubt, use a tape measure to find your perfect fit.

Leggings:

Leggings should feel snug to the body, without any excess fabric in the waist, knees, or bottom hem. The best-selling Compressive collection will feel quite snug and tight on your first wear. Don’t be alarmed — this is totally normal. You’ll start to feel them slightly relax and mould to your body with more wear. Just like that perfect pair of vintage jeans.

Shop Moon Pocket Leggings Girlfriend Collective at Sancho's

Are the leggings sheer-proof?

Most of the styles are 100% opaque, however some of the lighter colours aren't all 100% sheer-proof, so with lighter colours it is recommended to wear nude coloured underwear just in case.

Shop Dylan Bra in Moss Girlfriend Collective from Sancho's

Are the products sweat proof?

All of the Girlfriend Collective items are moisture wicking and quick drying, so you can work out as hard as you like and won't have to worry about sweat patches sticking around.

Shop Plum Girlfriend collective at Sancho's

Can you get the same products at the same time as Girlfriend Collective?

When it comes to core colours and styles, including black, midnight, ivory, moss, plum and moon, we are in sync with Girlfriend Collective, however when they release a new product or colour, they sell only via their own website for 1-2 seasons (up to a year), before they are made available to stockists. We have some really exciting new products coming from Girlfriend this year that we cannot wait to share, and we always appreciate your feedback on styles you have seen that you would like us to get, however it may take us a while to be able to get this for you.

So there you have it, the answers to our most frequently asked questions. If you have any further questions please don't hesitate to pop in store, contact our live chat, or e-mail us on [email protected]

We hope you love your Girlfriend Collective pieces as much as we do.

https://mycafelatte.com/blogs/news/what-is-fashion-revolution-week-2 2022-04-17T08:00:00+01:00 2022-04-19T09:24:50+01:00 What is Fashion Revolution Week? Roberta Juxon-Keen

What is Fashion Revolution?

Fashion Revolution is a fashion activism movement that was founded with the intention of prioritising the environment and people, over growth and profit. The Fashion Revolution movement was founded following the Rana Plaza disaster, where an eight-story building collapsed, killing 1,134 people with many of which being garment workers. This disaster emphasised the inhumane and awful working conditions that so many garment workers across the globe experience, all to create cheap clothing for our consumption. Fashion Revolution work towards amplifying the voices and experiences of garment workers, but they also work towards conserving resources and ecosystems that are damaged as a result of the fashion industry.

Fashion Revolution also intend to educate and raise awareness of the systematic challenges facing the global fashion industry. This will not only make more people aware of the corruption and inhumane practices that go into creating our clothing, but it will also make individuals consider where and who they are buying their clothes from.

Fashion Revolution Week takes place from the 18thto the 24thof April annually, to commemorate the anniversary of the 2013 Rana Plaza collapse. Following the #PayUp movement, and the mass-consumption of cheap clothing that has been happening due to COVID19, thinking about the origins and journey of the clothing we buy is more important than ever.

Why is Fashion Revolution important?

As consumers, we should know where our clothing comes from, and not only that, but who is responsible for making our clothing. Multi national corporations and brands use cheap labour and environmentally damaging processes to create their clothing. Fashion Revolution aim to end human and environmental exploitation in the global fashion industry by ensuring safe, dignified working conditions and living wages for all garment workers, as well as encouraging the global fashion industry to conserve precious resources and regenerate ecosystems.

Of course, all of these aims are on a bigger, global level, but Fashion Revolution also aim to change the way consumers think about their clothing. It is important that we not only raise awareness of the societal and environmental damage that is caused by the fashion industry, but we must also speak out and act against it in order for change to happen. It is also important that consumers demonstrate these feelings through their shopping habits. By consuming less from corrupt brands and companies, the fashion industry will hopefully change their practices for the better. This will not only benefit the garment workers, but will also benefit the environment and will therefore also benefit us.

What Can I Do as a Consumer?

  • Think Before You Buy

Before you buy an item, think about where that item has come from - why is it cheap or why ISN’T it cheap. Cheap items (e.g. fast fashion) tend to have been made unethically, whereas sustainable items that cost a bit more are priced regarding sustainable materials, ethical and safe workplaces and living wages for garment workers. However, this isn’t always the case with some companies greenwashing to seem ethical, when they really aren’t. This is why it’s always important to research the brands and companies you buy from if you aren’t sure about the history of the clothes you’re buying.

  • Think in the Long Run

Think before you buy any item of clothing – will I wear this 30 times? And not only that, but will the quality of this piece allow me to wear it 30 times without it falling to pieces? Though the number of people who are shopping ethically is gradually increasing, there is still an issue with over-consumption. Even if you buy your clothing from sustainable brands, constantly purchasing and wearing new pieces isn’t ethical if those pieces are one-off ‘trendy’ pieces that will soon be re-sold, donated, or thrown away.

Instead, try to fill your closet with essential pieces that you really love and that you know you’ll want to wear at least 30 times. Sustainable and ethical fashion doesn’t have to be expensive, as we prove here at Sancho’s. If you really want to embrace a fully sustainable approach towards clothing, why not try a capsule wardrobe? A capsule wardrobe is a collection of high-quality, essential items, and can be styled in lots of different ways throughout the year. Having a refined collection of clothing will lead to less consumption, and really treasuring the items you own.

  • Shop Responsibly

By researching the brands you buy from, you will gain an understanding of which brands are ethical, and which aren’t. Shopping from sustainable and ethical brands is not only contributing towards a better future for the fashion industry, but it also encourages less sustainable brands who mass-produce, to re-consider their practices. Whilst it’s true that producers and fashion brands have a responsibility to produce responsibly, we as consumers are also responsible for the items we buy, whilst understanding our own personal privilege and what it is we can do as an individual. This is different for everyone, so do what you can, where you can.

How do Sancho’s participate in Fashion Revolution Week?

By only selling ethical products that are made using sustainable materials, we value people and the planet above profit, and use our resources to educate and raise awareness about sustainability. We are committed to natural and quality materials that won’t further damage the planet, as well as safe working conditions and fair wages for those who make our products.

This year, we will be sharing their events and resources like these here. We'll also be hosting a panel to discuss the Fashion Revolution with two special guests on Friday 22nd April in store, where they'll be drinks and more to enjoy as part of the event. So make sure to follow us on our InstagramFacebook and Twitter to keep up to date with Fashion Revolution Week.

Why We Love Girlfriend Collective

Girlfriend Collective are not only one of the bestselling brands at Sancho’s, but also one of our favourites to stock. They promote inclusivity and conscious shopping through their ethically made active wear. Plus, their recycled PET Compressive High Rise Leggings have received some of our best reviews because of their soft, comfortable fit that stays up during exercise, allowing you to feel and perform at your best. We are diving deeper into how Girlfriend Collective activewear is made to tell you everything you need to know about the sustainable brand.

Shop Girlfriend Collective Recycled Activewear

How Do We Know That Girlfriend Is Made Ethically?

Girlfriend Collective’s compressive leggings and sports bras are made from 79% recycled polyester (or RPET) and 21% spandex. They use recycled post-consumer plastic bottles to make their polyester. This means that each pair of leggings diverts 25 water bottles from going to landfill and each bra diverts 11.

To make the ethical polyester, they collect post-consumer water bottles, remove their labels and lids, and sort them by colour. These are then crushed into billions of miniscule chips, and washed until they are sparkling clean. The chips are then transported to their manufacturing facility where they are made into pellets which are transformed into superfine threads and spun together into yarn. From there they are spun onto large bobbins, packaged, and sent to the knitting factory. This process requires time and precision, so the knitting machines can only produce around 100 pairs-worth of fabric in a 24-hour period. This means that you know that the ethical activewear is of a high quality and made to be durable.

Their fabric dyeing process is also sustainable as the fabric is dyed with eco-friendly dyes. The waste water is then cleaned and cooled before it is released. Girlfriend Collective even donate the dye mud to a local pavement facility where it’s recycled into sidewalks and roads!

This process can result in some irregularities in the colours which means that they recommend washing your new leggings with similar colours first just in case they run.

Where is Girlfriend Collective Active Wear Made?

All of their fabrics are made from recycled materials at their factory in Taiwan, which is owned by a respected Taiwanese family that have been at the forefront of the recycling industry for decades. They specialise in eco-friendly and high-quality textiles, which are then cut and sewn in one of their partner facilities that was chosen for their ethical values. Girlfriend Collective chose to produce their activewear in Taiwan because this is where some of the best manufacturers for high-performance fabrics are located.

Taiwan is also the perfect location for sourcing all of the post consumer water bottles as it is a world leader in recycling with 55% of their waste being recycled. Taiwan once struggled to clean up mass amounts of waste resulting from rising living standards and soaring consumption. This led the government to transform the way that their waste was handled. Recycling has become a community activity in Taiwan. People gather each night to sort their waste and connect with eachother.

Plus, the Girlfriend Collective facility is certified by the Taiwanese government which means that security measures are implemented, and each facility is held accountable for how much plastic is taken in and shipped out.

How Is the Factory Run?

The core factory is located in Hanoi, Vietnam, and is SA8000 certified. This certification guarantees fair wages, safe and healthy conditions, and zero forced or child labour. Girlfriend Collective can promise that their workers are well-paid, safe, and living healthy lives. Their workers are also provided both free catered lunch (and dinner for those who work the evening shifts) instead of just a lunchroom, and guided exercise breaks. As well as free health check ups every 6 months at the factory for every employee, and health insurance. When you buy active wear from Girlfriend Collective you know that it is ethically made with care.

What are the Girlfriend Collective Fabric Certifications?

SA8000 was developed by Social Accountability International, and made to protect workers worldwide by providing a guide to protect workers’ conditions and wages.

Their recycled fabric is certified Standard 100 by OEKO-TEX, the world’s leader in testing fabrics to regulate harmful substances. This means that the fabrics contain no harmful substances so that you know exactly what you’re putting on your body. Girlfriend Collective recommend washing your synthetic activewear in a washing bag or filter to prevent the microfibers from entering streams and the oceans. This protects the wildlife that lives there.

Is Girlfriend Inclusive?

Girlfriend Collective stands out as a brand that takes inclusivity very seriously. They have done many things to show their customers that they care about them. Their product descriptions and adverts feature models with a range of sizes, ethnicities, ages, races, and skin-tones. Plus, many of their images feature models with stretch marks and skin conditions such as vitiligo. This shows that they want their brand to make everyone feel comfortable. At Sancho’s we stock Girlfriend Collective in sizes XXS to 6XL, making it our most size inclusive brand. We want everyone to find activewear that is the right fit for them which is why we will always sell this line.

Also, Girlfriend Collective claim that the majority of their colours are 100% sheer-proof, other than their lighter colours which they recommend wearing underwear that matches your skin tone just in case.

We are extremely excited to announce that we are releasing a new range of Girlfriend Collective activewear online and in store now! Our new collection features more of your favourite core colours, black, midnight, moss, moon and plum, plus wider range of styles and colours of sports leggingsbras, and skorts in three new fresh Spring colours, Mantis, Primrose and Golden Glow. We also have some new additions to the lighter weight FLOAT range! The new colours and styles are perfect for Summer, so that you can be active and sustainable in style.

Below you'll find our top 5 most versatile sustainable dresses, with ideas on different ways we would style them for every occasion or season.

Made from organic cotton, hemp or eco viscose, these dresses are all made from high quality sustainable materials that will feel comfortable, breathable and make you look great.

1. Caaitlin Midi Dress in Floral Print

Shop Caaitlin Ethical Dress at Sancho's

This floaty lightweight dress is made from 100% Lenzing Ecovero Viscose that feels sleek and drapes beautifully. Nodding to the traditional tea-dress style, but with some modern updates like the front slit and larger somewhat abstract floral print, this dress is a super easy one to dress up or down. Keep it casual in warmer weather with a pair of white trainers, dress it up for a wedding by adding a heel or smart shoe and bag that pulls out one of the colours in the print, or take it out for dinner or an evening out with sandals, a red lip and some statement earrings. We'd also wear this in autumn/winter with thick tights, knee high or ankle boots and a chunky knit jumper over the top for a gorgeous layered look.

2. Annabel Checked Dress in Yellow and White

Shop ethical and sustainable fashion at Sancho's

This woven organic cotton dress with adjustable shoulder straps, midi length and flattering empire bodice which flows into a roomy skirt has a touch of old school 50s elegance about it. We love the yellow and white check and would wear this casually over a white t-shirt with trainers or sandals. For evening, or holidays, it would look great worn alone, but we think this could be dressed up beautifully with a crisp white shirt over top and tied at the waist, some elegant espadrille wedges or heels and a red lip. This dress would be great for a Summer wedding too, just add a shawl, comfortable but pretty heel or sandal, a coordinating clutch and some gold jewellery to lift the look.

3. Dianella Organic Cotton Trapeze Dress in Black

shop ethical and sustainable fashion

This Dianella organic cotton trapeze dress is a flattering and fuss-free oversized dress you can easily just chuck on and go. Keep it simple for day and team with chunky sandals, sliders, or sneakers and a tote bag for a casual look or dress it up for night with an up-do to show off the sweet frilled neckline, some statement shoes to offset the simplicity of the dress and some big gold hoops to add a little sparkle. We'd wear this on holiday from beach to bar with a straw bag or hat and our favourite sandals. For autumn and winter, we'd team this lined dress with tights, boots and a sleeveless knitted tank top to give it a fresh new look that will keep you warm and help you get your wear out of this simple but effective dress.

4. Caroline Dress in Field Print

Shop Ethical and Sustainable Fashion at Sancho's

The Caroline Field Print Wrap Dress is an elegant maxi dress in a mood-lifting green print, with cape sleeves, pretty shoulder gathers and a skirt that flares to a gentle A line from the waist. Made from floaty sustainable Tencel Lyocell, this dress will flatter a whole range of bodies due to it's wrap-style which compliments, elevates and creates shape. This dress can totally be dressed down for day to day with trainers and you could even add a cap. For evenings we would let the dress do the talking and team with a smarter shoe, and for a wedding, we see this being elevated with bold colourful accessories, such as some coloured statement earrings and a bright bag and shoes either in a colour that is featured in the print such as yellow, or in a clashing colour that still works with the green such as a bright pink. The floral print and fresh colours might not traditionally take you through winter, but we see this being worn through Autumn with navy or yellow chunky cardigans, boots and an oversized scarf.

5. Patricia Shibori Dress in Black

Shop ethical Sustainable Fashion at Sancho's

This organic cotton Patricia Shibori print dress has a soft feel that will be a delight to wear. It's weighty enough to hang beautifully, but not so heavy you can't wear it in the heat. We love this alone with trainers or sliders and a straw bag for day. It can be worn for evening or the office with a black, cream or brown blazer over top, some smart brogues, heels or ankle boots in either tan or black to reflect the colours in the print and a smart cross-body bag. To dress this up for a wedding, we recommend some statement shoes and layers of subtle beaded necklaces to lift it. We'd take this dress into autumn and winter with the addition of a slim fit polo neck underneath in black, white, or a contrasting colour, or wear it with a vintage or vegan leather jacket, tights, and chunky ankle boots.

So there you have it, our top 5 most versatile dresses and how we recommend you wear them for different occasions and temperatures. Be sure to check out the full range (which are all just as versatile) here and make the most out of your old and new dresses by playing with different ways to style them, you'll be amazed at how hard your wardrobe can work for you, so you don't have to.

Whether you need something for work, play or as a go to everyday piece, we've got a jumpsuit style for everyone, all of which can be seen here.

Are you a jumpsuit enthusiast too or have you not yet tried an all in one? We've put together 5 reasons we love a jumpsuit, and think you will, too...

1. They're a one and done piece...

Isn't it a dream to be able to say, "oh this? I just threw it on..." and mean it? That feeling can be yours with one of our sustainable jumpsuit styles. Just wake up, put on, and go...All you need is a few accessories and essentials and you're good to go. One of the simplest ways to look chic and effortless in a flash, so you've got more time to spend getting on with your day rather than worrying about what to wear, we're sold.

Alex Wears - Hadley Boilersuit in Navy - £155

2. They work hard in your wardrobe...

While jumpsuits can be a one and done piece, they are also super versatile to style in a plethora of different ways. Heading to the office? Team a jumpsuit with a blazer and smart shoe. Going for drinks or dinner? Add a statement earring and a heel. Dressing it down for a day at home, the beach or in the garden? Wear with a canvas trainer, slider or birkenstock and accessorise with an open oversized linen shirt and a hat in the sun. The same jumpsuit can see you through all sorts of occasions with some thoughtful styling choices. It can also see you though different seasons, wear alone in Summer, layer with base layers such as long sleeve tees or polo necks underneath in Autumn and wear tights underneath and jumpers overtop to have your jumpsuit look like a cool pair of trousers in Winter...Our collection of jumpsuits are made out of a range of sustainable materials, some lighter than others, but all can be made to work for you all year round when teaming with the rest of your wardrobe.

There really is a jumpsuit cut to suit every body shape, age and style. More often then not, a good jumpsuit will compliment and enhance your shape, and the unbroken line of a jumpsuit is universally flattering. A lot of our styles have waist defining cuts but for those wanting a straighter cut, we have those too. Whether you feel more confident in a wide leg, slim tapered leg, a short sleeve or long-sleeve, there's a style to flatter and accentuate your favourite parts of you, a jumpsuit can make you feel like yourself at your most put together and confident without any of the fuss.

4. They're comfortable...

An all in one style, whether a fitted soft jersey, loose dungaree or a utility style boilersuit, is going to feel comfortable. Without lots of layers, the feeling of a restrictive jean on your stomach, or chaffing from exposed limbs in the Summer and so on, you're free to move, walk, work, lay down, even JUMP without feeling held back by your clothing. We love a jumpsuit for looking deceptively 'put together' while feeling confidently comfortable, because fashion doesn't have to hurt.

5. They give you a confidence boost...

A good jumpsuit evokes the feeling of power dressing, whether you are heading to a board meeting, a picnic in the park, running errands around town, or drinks at your local cocktail bar. Jumpsuits make you feel good, which ultimately makes you look good. There's something 'cool' about wearing a jumpsuit to that Summer wedding or on that date, and that's because they look strong, make you stand out and feel comfortable and confident, and we all know inner confidence is the best accessory.

A good pair of jeans is a wardrobe staple, but there’s a whole range of denim cuts to choose from that work differently for different body types and suit a range of occasions.

Below you’ll find our favourite ways to style our favourite denim cuts. So whether you love a classic Straight Leg, a flattering Mom fit, or super Skinnies we’ve got all these cuts and more in store and all the inspiration you need to style them up perfectly. You can shop the full denim collection here.

The Straight Leg:

A straight leg jean is flattering on a range of body types and looks chic an effortless whether dressed up or down. We recommend wearing with a classic button up like the Gia Hemp Shirt with a slight French tuck to show off this mid waist style, finishing off the fit with sunnies, jewellery and sandals for a simple Spring look. A straight leg jean like our Fjella’s in Clouded Grey will also look fantastic with brogues or ankle boots and a slim fit knit or recycled cashmere jumper for a cool androgynous look that works for day or night with the changing of a few accessories (pop on some heeled ankle boots, load up on jewellery and add a bold lip for a relaxed evening out).

Judith Knit Top in Hazelnut - £85 // Fjella Cropped Jeans in Clouded Grey - Now £85 // Abbi Vegan Tote in Black - £95 // Anchor Bracelet in Gold - £27

The Mom Jeans:

A Mom jean, inspired by the cuts of the 80's and 90's, feature a high slim waist, and a relaxed but narrow leg. The high waist creates shape while flattering and lifting the bum, and the casual narrow legs make these the perfect everyday jean that you can also dress up for night. We love these jeans at any time, but especially like them in the Spring with a simple t-shirt tucked in to accentuate the waist, some delicate chains and a great pair of trainers. Dress these up for night with a pair of heels, a slim fit top, a blazer and and some statement earrings for a contemporary casual look.

The Skinny Jeans:

The tightest style we do in terms of cut, our Ingaa Skinny Jeans don't compromise on comfort, as they are super soft and supportive and flatter your curves beautifully with the high waist. We love balancing out the proportions of these with an oversized jumper and ankle or knee high boots (skinnies are perfect for this look) for day, or dressing them up with a pretty blouse, sandals and jewellery for a smarter, Summery look.

In her conversation with Kalkidan, we learn more about her upcoming book 'Queer Body Power,' along with what LGBTQ+ History Month means to her and the life experiences that have helped shape her. Keep scrolling to read the full interview, and to shop Essie's Capsule Edit, featuring all her current favourite, most versatile pieces, here.

Essie Wears: Patricia Shibori Dress in Black // Viaa Recycled Wool Knitted Tank in Black

Kalkidan: Hi Essie, welcome to the conversation! You and I know each other, and it's such a joy to know you. I'm trying to think back to when we met...did we meet at the shop or did we meet before the shop?

Essie: I think it was at the shop. I don’t remember exactly how it happened but maybe I contacted you or you contacted me or something and I was doing maybe a blog or something for Sancho's and it was when you were in the little shop, not the big one. I think I only had 2,000 followers then, everything was so much smaller!

Kalkidan: And we did a photoshoot in our flat.

Essie: Oh, that was so good.

Kalkidan: I thought those pictures were so good. Back when I used to take pictures, I would think 'I am such a talented photographer,' but I took like six photos. You looked amazing though, you’ve got the most amazing bottom. I'm sure you won't mind my saying.

Essie: Thank you, I totally agree!

Kalkidan: And of course, you walked in our first Slow Fashion Show and modelled for the posters at Genova Cathedral.

Essie: That was so much fun, too. I miss being able to come in to the shop. I remember it was such a nice experience coming in because I know you would style me and help me pick outfits, it was a fun thing to do while I was at Uni.

Kalkidan: I am glad to hear it. I started doing that because so many women would come in to the shop with a misguided sense of their bodies and would say things like: "Only this suits me" or "this wont work" and then you just realise at some point that so many people are just uncomfortable in their skin. So then I went the opposite way and I would encourage people to try on different outfits and look at themselves and appreciate they're gorgeous, you know.

Essie: I love that. That was one of my favourite things because you would often pick stuff out I wouldn’t pick for myself and even now when I am trying on Sancho's clothes for the shoot today I was just like, I wouldn’t pick this for myself, but now I cant stop thinking about it and I need to have it! *buys Jasmine Cardigan Their such nice quality pieces as well. How things feel to me is really important, especially because I have chronic pain, I have to have fabrics that feel good on my body, and your clothing always feels good.

Kalkidan: Thank you, I am so glad to hear it. This is exactly what we want Sancho's to be – a place where people can feel comfortable and find things they love, so to hear it back is wonderful. I don’t spend as much time in the shop as I used to, but just so you know, we have Aoife, who as our shop manager does a much better job of all that then me, so you should come in when you're next in Devon soon and experience that!

Essie: I definitely want to come down and have the experience once again.

Kalkidan: So, if you were introducing yourself to a new audience or you walked into a room or you had to do one of those dreaded things where you have to sit in a circle and say a little bit about yourself, what do you say?

Essie: I probably say I'm an author now, because that’s technically what I am now, which still fees bizarre for me to say, but I am a queer and body positive activist and author. Also an artist because I've got my art shop 'Queer In Colour' going now which is fantastic, and that’s pretty much it I suppose. I did used to be a plus size model but I've stopped doing that, so there's just been quite a long career even though I am quite young, it feels like a long career

Kalkidan: So there's been iterations of your career, but do you think there's some core themes?

Essie: Yes, body positivity and eating disorder recovery was definitely the start to everything, and then once I felt comfortable coming out, I could kind of merge the queer body positivity together which was really good. Once I did finally decide I was comfortable to come out online, it just opened up. I got so many messages from people and it just felt like it was the right space to talk about it and now with the book of course. Not that much has been written for body positivity specifically for queer people, so there was a good space there to talk about that and get a lot of other queer people in to discuss that topic, too. I think those are the main themes.

Kalkidan: Well thank you so much for that introduction. And just a little shout out to your art cos its really beautiful. I know you do a lot of astrological things which is cool.

Essie: Yes, I kind of mix body positivity themes with my Greek heritage. I didn’t used to care as much about my heritage as I do now, and I don’t know if it's as you get older you get more into it, but I've just been learning more and more about Greece and I like to keep that in my artwork as much as possible. Mainly because I hated being Greek when I was a kid, I used to pretend I wasn’t, so now I'm a grown up I like to include it and those pieces tend to do really well which is nice

Kalkidan: It's beautiful. I think I had a similar shame around being an immigrant, being an asylum seeker, being African when I was younger, but I definitely think you get to a point in your head where you realise that shame was contextual and was actually all of the white supremacy in a culture that drives you to think that about yourself. I definitely found in early adulthood I have become really interested in my background so yeah, that's been the journey for me. But thank you so much for your introduction. We are really excited that you're here talking to us to celebrate LGBTQ+ History month this year. Could you describe a little bit about the month and what tends to happen?

Essie: It's specifically about highlighting LGBTQ+ history which is something that can often get lost in discussions of big moments that have happened. You know, queer people have always been here, and often that’s another thing about re-contextualising history and going back and looking in to it. We have it a lot at the moment where you'll discover historical figures that were actually part of the LGBTQ+ community but it was hidden and things like that. So it is just about going back and learning just how much queer history that there is. I don’t know about you, but I didn’t learn anything about it at school, at all

Kalkidan: Not at all

Essie: I don’t think I learnt anything in any sort of education. That might have been a big reason as to why it took so long for me to come out. I didn’t really know what it meant to be part of a community because it just wasn’t talked about. I was in school during section 28, when it was illegal to talk about being part of the community. You weren’t allowed to mention it at all.

Kalkidan: Can u just describe in more detail, what was section 28?

Essie: Sure, section 28 was brought in my Margaret Thatcher and it meant that you were not allowed to "promote" homosexuality. It was illegal to talk about it in any schools, colleges, youth groups and other publicly owned spaces. It pretty much decimated any queer groups where people were being helped because you could be arrested for even talking about homosexuality, "promoting" it ended up meaning speaking about it any terms. So all the infrastructure that had been put in place for queer people to find a connection or support was gone. I was about at the end of primary/beginning of secondary when section 28 was repealed, but even though the law changed, there was still nothing there to work with. It took a really long time until people did start talking about it at schools again because you came from it being illegal and had to navigate how to bring it back into the conversation. So yes, it did mess up a lot of peoples education. I had queer people around me growing up you know, and now thinking back when I would talk about them in school, it would be like a strange reaction, like a silence, because before the repeal a teacher couldn’t react to it cos if they did they could be arrested.

Kalkidan: So there was no support system to understand yourself or understand the world or how to navigate it.

Essie: Yes, and you know not talking about it it doesn’t make people not queer, it just makes them end up repressing a lot and you don’t realise until you get older and begin to work through it.

Kalkidan: You know, there is a violence in not allowing people to express who they are, or understand who they are, or build communities around thier core characteristics.

Essie: If you have problems with being gay or bisexual or whatever and you need to go somewhere about it you couldn't. You could be experiencing violence at home or violence at school because of it and teachers are not allowed to help you with it. Section 28 is one of those things that I talk a little bit about in my book because I know a lot of teenagers are going to read it and might not know about it. It's in our living memory and a lot of us will have experienced that.

Kalkidan: Two decades, everybody living today, including those born after it was repealed will be affected by the impact it had on culture, norms, behaviours and resources. I think people who don’t have those experiences think that once something changes we belong in a new world, but we are dealing with all of the history here, and we need to deal with and process all of it and acknowledge before we can say things have progressed. To be honest, I am making an assumption there that things have progressed. How do you feel about how things have progressed as a queer person?

Essie: Things are different at schools now, however, now we are facing a similar issue with trans rights, Even the language that’s used, it's all the same as what was happening with section 28, so I am at this point concerned about what's gonna happen with trans rights. It's become pretty dire around here, in terms of allowing trans people to use whatever bathroom they want and things like that. So as much as it has progressed in certain ways, but I think we are going backwards with trans rights and its scary.

Kalkidan: So, you've written a book, 'Queer Body Power'. I'm so so proud of you, you've given so much information and education to people across your social media pages which is the primary way I learn from you, and I am so delighted that that’s now transforming into a physical, tangible book and I absolutely think that books are part of history. It's just really cool andI am just so excited for you, and the world actually, you know, to be introduced to your thoughts and perspectives.

Essie: Thank you, I'm so excited. It's funny I was just an English student when I met you, and now I am an author, it's crazy.

Kalkidan: And in less than 5 years which is really cool, so I'm assuming lots more books will come from you eventually?

Essie: I hope so, it was definitely enjoyable to write and dig deep into things that maybe I hadn’t properly talked about before, so I am very excited for people to read it and also for something tangible to exist.

Kalkidan: So tell us about 'Queer Body Power.' What's the book about?

Essie: It's about how queer people relate to their bodies. I wanted to do something specifically for queer people, because they actually have the highest rates of eating disorders, higher than heterosexual people, and there's a lot of research out there that I felt hadn’t been bought together. The reasons for queer people not eating or struggling with their bodies can be very different for the community. Obviously my experiences are very specific ones, so I bought in other people from different backgrounds to talk about their experiences with their bodies so it wasn’t just me. It also goes through my experiences not only with eating disorders but my experiences with homelessness, fashion and gender. I've tried to fill the book as much as possible but make it accessible enough that young people can read it in the hope that they can feel content in their bodies.

Kalkidan: Amazing, what a powerful way to share you own stories and experiences. Do you feel a book like this can help younger people navigate the world and how to make sense of it while seeing themselves more clearly?

Essie: I think just the part of putting on a page what I was feeling and what I experience feels like the most powerful thing you can do sometimes. A few people who have reviewed from advanced copies have said they didn’t realise something they were dealing with was until they read it. I think the book is even for people who aren’t queer. I think there's a lot of relatable elements, especially eating disorders. I want people to be able to read it and know their not alone in these things. I think a lot of people will look at me on social media and think that everything's fine when actually two and a half years ago, I had no where to live and rely on the kindness of people giving me their sofas for about three months. I didn’t brush my hair for about a month, and had two pairs of underwear, going around trying to find places to wash them. Homelessness is a really big issue for the LGBTQ+ community and I wanted them to know I do understand that experience and I am not just someone who makes everything look fine and happy on social media you know.

Kalkidan: So can you tell us about the relationship between the LGBTQ+ experience and homelessness?

Essie: One of the main things is a lot of people can end up in violent or abusive situations or they aren’t accepted by their family, particularly LGBTQ+ youth. That’s why such a high proportion end up homeless at some point in their life, as well as a struggle with being able to get jobs, which is particularly difficult for trans people. As much as yo think you are protected, people can find any reason to not give you a job, that’s something me and my partner have definitely experienced with housing. There's a lot of reasons why its particularly difficult to get set up and that's why so many LGBTQ+ people can also end up in situations with substance abuse and really difficult mental health issues, which they don’t necessarily get help with, especially if they're out on the street or hidden homeless like I was – where you have sofas to live on but no actual home, you can end up not getting support. If you don’t have a permanent residence it can make it really difficult to get healthcare, especially if your trans, and it sort of snowballs, and that’s something people who haven’t experienced homelessness just don’t get. I remember having to somehow put together an outfit to go to a job interview but I had no clothes that actually looked appropriate for a job interview/ I don't think I was eating very well, I was very sick, I wasn't sleeping, and I was extremely stressed. It's very difficult to get yourself out of that. I found I disassociated from my body entirely, I think I managed not to brush my hair for about a month and then I looked in a mirror and took it in. I ended up cutting off all my hair, knowing I needed to try and make myself look better. But I had total disassociated from my body at that point.

Kalkidan: Can you tell me how you went from that to the position where you could find security, write the book and be able to interpret the experience back to people?

Essie: I had a part time job at the time I was working at a bookshop, making about £400 a month which wasn’t enough to get anywhere, and I basically ended up relying on the kindness of people who really didn’t know me. After a few months of really struggling I was basically offered a room for a bit to sit and find myself a job. And that’s the issue for a lot of people is that they don’t have that support, I was extremely lucky with the support of people who are queer and who genuinely didn’t really know me at the time. I couldn’t believe the kindness. I did manage to find a job eventually and then moved to London without that much money. It was the March when the pandemic hit, two days before lockdown, I had just moved in with my partner. I eventually was made redundant and on the week that happened I ended up getting my book deal. During the pandemic I wrote a proposal and sent it out thinking "what's the worst that could happen - publishers could say no," but they didn’t say no, they said yes! I decided because of that redundancy, which was very scary for me because I had experience of not having a home or money, that I would try and go freelance with art and social media. I ended up finding an agent, who is great and she works through everything with me and things just somehow got better!

Kalkidan: Well that is just amazing and I think the world is lucky to have the book and more opportunities to understand the queer experience. Something that deeply frustrate me is that navigating societies inequalities and all of these horrible prejudices that people hold have such real consequences to peoples lives. Living your life while experiencing the discrimination, whether it's overt or subvert or can't be aligned to one person. We think there are safety nets but they're not equally distributed and I feel like I have so many friends who have to do so much more just to get live their lives and it really makes me angry. I just deal with a lot of anger around that, and who wants to be angry all the time?

Essie: I totally understand that anger that’s welling up. We constantly hearing about injustice and it's just so unfair, but sometimes you just think, "what do I do?" I want to be able to do something, but it just exhausting, which I am sure you understand as well. You end up having to use so much of your energy just to feel like "I am a human being, please can I get some kind of support?"

Kalkidan: I'm interested in how you navigate your social presence in that context. You're have a huge Instagram and tik tok following, and there's so much work that goes in to maintaining and sustaining those platforms. I always struggle with how to take the stuff that I am experiencing and what to share and from where I'm sitting it seems like you share so much about your life, how do you choose what you audience sees and how does it affect you?

Essie: I think over the years I have had a strange relationship with social media. When I first started I could share whatever I wanted, but when it became a job I felt a little bit shaky about what I should share and how deeply. cos like oh what do I share now am I supposed to not go into the deep stuff, Ultimately I decided you know, fuck that, but you do get to a point where you think, if this is my job, and I have this huge responsibility and following, I have to be careful. But I still try to go back to the fact that it is my personal social media, I exist as a person, and as much as people think I should or shouldn’t post certain things, I just share what feels right to me. I don’t necessarily share everything. It's funny because I am actually quite a private person and there's a lot that people don’t know. If I share anything to do with trauma, I have to be mindful of and knowhow I word it and know that I have overcome it or am in a good place for it. I don't want to trigger anyone else's trauma, particularly around eating disorders. When I do discuss my experiences of when I was really sick, I try not to post too many pictures of me when I was particularly small, as I know that would be triggering for people and might be for me too, I don’t know, I don’t look at them. There's just certain decisions I have to make so I am being responsible and not retraumatising anybody. I do think very deeply about what I put on social media, and I also try to post things that are more fun and positive. Not everything has to be deep. Sometimes people want to see a plus size person put on an outfit because they're a plus size person and they want some inspiration. Not every post has to be the most important thing in the world, because it is just social media and you are still connecting with people, and you're still allowed to have fun.

Kalkidan: Thank you for communicating your story. I can't wait to get in to your book! I've skimmed enough to know I love your style and that I am going to learn a lot from someone I love and respect. Is it available for pre-order?

Essie: Thank you, I really hope you like it. I can't believe people are reading it. And yes, you can pre order it at all the usual places you would get books, but also on my publishers website JKP. I always encourage going to indies and getting them to pre order, that's always good in my book!

Kalkidan: Well for any Genova/Devon readers, we recommend our local Book Bag! So Essie, we’ve come to the end, there's so much more I could ask you but perhaps we can do this again soon. But for now let's take it out with a quick fire round...I always think they're fun so...

Kalkidan: What's your favourite song?

Essie: Oh my gosh, what's my favourite song? The only thing coming to my mind is Disney songs right now, that's so embarrassing. The first song that came to my head was Hercules, and now I'm thinking no no no you have to have something cooler than that. What's my most listened to on Spotify? Space Girl, I love Space Girl by Frances Forever... I will listen to that on repeat, it's a queer love song and I enjoy it. .

Kalkidan: What do you do for self care?

Essie: I play video games. I'm a hardcore gamer.

Kalkidan: What's your favourite go-to snack?

Essie: A really bougie coffee, like a latte with lots of stuff in it, or hot chocolate.

Kalkidan: Thank you so much Essie. Thank you so much for the work you are doing with Sancho's this month. Everybody go buy Queer Body Power and follow Essie on Instagram and tik tok @khal_essie! Thanks again for joining us, Essie.

We hope you've enjoyed this informative chat between Kalkidan and Essie and learnt something new. We fully recommend picking up her book which is released on the 21st March and available for pre-order now!

Thanks for reading!

What does a dream wardrobe look like to you? For us, it’s a collection of pieces we feel comfortable and confident in, either in good quality sustainable fabrics, second hand, or circular, and is easy to style in a multitude of ways. Capsule wardrobing is a fine art, and while it’s one we haven’t all got down to a tee (I for one, am very sentimental about some of my old clothes, even if I don’t wear them anymore), it does make complete sense to have a selection of pieces you know you can wear in rotation without getting bored or compromising on style.

We are so proud of our core collection of sustainable staples, and while we don’t encourage you to throw out your old fast fashion garments or buy new for the sake of it being certified ‘Sustainable’ (because that would defy the point), we would encourage you to buy less, but buy better, and sustainable, where possible and when necessary.

When sourcing our collections, we aim to find classic pieces that can work for a wide range of occasions and feel timeless, so you can reach for them season after season and still feel good in yourself. Style is important to your confidence as well as expressing yourself, so while we do also look for more trend-led pieces - a fun print here, or an interesting cut there, we will always keep in stock a range of consistent styles, such as our organic cotton underwear, best-selling jumpsuits, everyday jewellery, sustainable activewear and a range of trousers suitable for chilling out, working out, or even going out.

Keep scrolling to see our Top Five pieces that we think are the building blocks to a better wardrobe, including some tips on how we would style them differently for different occasions...

1. Underwear

Comfortable, flattering, and supportive underwear is an absolute essential foundation in anyone’s wardrobe, and we love every single range we offer for different reasons. We have gorgeous naturally dyed, subtly sexy styles from Aussie brand Hara the Label, core every day breathable essentials, including padded soft bras from bamboo-loving Boody, our favourite ever period pants from Pantys, and of course, our soft bra tops, pants, thongs and dressier lace-trim triangle bras from People Tree. While we can’t pick a favourite, we thoroughly recommend our People Tree Basics Bundles for stocking up on your everyday necessities at a more accessible price point that rivals other none-sustainably made options. Fancy something more colourful? Our Hara Bundles are a great investment for every day, special occasions, and even wearing as swimwear in natural waters in the Summer!

2. A Jumpsuit

A good jumpsuit is a fantastic addition to any wardrobe. When you find the right jumpsuit, you’ve got a piece you can wear day or night, layer up for winter, pare back in Summer, and even lounge around in. We have a fantastic range of jumpsuits available, but our top pick must be our best-selling Oliana, now also available in a new printed version we love for Spring if you already own this capsule piece and need an update! Made from soft organic cotton, with a flattering cut that suits a range of body shapes, defining the waist softly, with a wrapped V-neck, tapered legs and pockets, this jumpsuit will work hard in your wardrobe. Below we have shown how we would style it for chilling out (or working from home), enjoying a day out (both layered up for cooler days and styled for Summer) and going out (we recommend a bold lip and some fancy heels to finish this look).

3. Denim

There's a reason jeans have been a mainstay in both fashion and function for so long. Stylish yet practical, comfortable or dressy - they are a versatile piece in most people's wardrobes and tend to get softer and more moulded to you over time. It's important to us to keep organic cotton styles, which use less water in production, in store for the next time you need to replace your trusty pair. Jeans shopping can be a difficult process, so we are always happy to help with sizing and styles. We aim to keep in a selection of cuts to suit a range shapes, styles, seasons and occasions. We (and our customers) love our classic Mom Jeans from Armedangels, the perfect everyday pair. We also have some great skinny jeans, which are great with a chunky knit and boots in winter, and a new wide leg style from People Tree - a perfect Summer pair with room to breathe and they look great with sandals, too!

A capsule of basic versatile tops is essential for work, play, or down time. We recommend these classics for day - a classic crew neck t-shirt, some lighter jumpers like this Breton stripe jumper or a recycled cashmere jumper, layering pieces, and a blouse or body for dressing up for night or smart occasions. Having a core collection of tops that you can layer together, team with smart or casual trousers or skirts, or even layer under (or over) jumpsuits, dungarees or dresses to give a new twist on an old look, is really useful, and will help you get a multitude of outfits out of a few simple pieces. Our most loved pairs of trousers are a comfy pair that we feel just as good at home in as dressing up for venturing outdoors, like the Sasha organic cotton slim leg smart jersey trousers or Chandre wide leg trousers, both perfect with slippers, sandals, trainers, ankle boots, and with a plethora of the aforementioned tops and layers. We all know Valentines Day can be arbitrary, contrived, even, but we wanted to share the love and mark the occasion with ideas of how to spend it, outfit inspiration, and some music to accompany your date. Whether you’re celebrating it with your partner, using it as an excuse to hang out with your pals, or indulging in some important self-love and care, keep reading for our thoughts on how to embrace the love.

Disclaimer – of course, you don’t have to be single, in a relationship or with pals to do any of these suggestions – tailor your time and do what you love, this Valentine’s Day and beyond…

Having a Date Night

The Look:

Embracing the occasion and opting for a date night? Whether you’re staying in or venturing out, it’s important your date night look makes you feel good, which will ultimately make you look good. Comfort is key, so we’ve kept it simple and easy to recreate with our date night outfit inspo…Sometimes “jeans and a nice top” is just what the doctor ordered, and we love this new Cosma Top with gorgeous chest detail and statement sleeves, teamed with these stretchy, soft, and flattering Ingaa High-Waist Skinny jeans, both of which you can style again and again throughout the season. Finish off with a statement earring and a bold lip for a look that’s sophisticated, fuss-free, and allows you to feel confident inside and out!

Date night look

Things To Do:

If you’re staying in, why not cook together and enjoy some wine, music, and games. Fancy leaving the house? While it isn’t the most original, dinner and a movie (romantic movie optional) is a classic date night combo we all know and love. We recommend catching Licorice Pizza or Belfast and are eager to check out Souvenir Part II as well. For dinner or drinks, whether you want to keep it casual or enjoy some fancy food, if you’re local to Genova, we can’t recommend The Flat, Topsham Brewery, The Hourglass or Stage enough. Not local? Be sure to use date night as a chance to scout out your local independents and support small businesses while discovering characterful gems!

The Gifts:

Gifting beyond a card or a bunch of flowers may be too much, but be sure to check out our ranges of slippers, vegan chocolate, and jewellery should you wish to share a little token of your affection with your partners! We’ve put together a Share the Love Edit you can explore online now…

The Soundtrack:

We’ve put together a playlist of all our favourite love songs: check out ‘Love in All Its Forms’ on our Spotify here and enjoy! Our Top 5 songs to bring the romance on date night are:

  1. Harvest Moon – Neil Young
  2. Blueberry Hill – Louis Armstrong
  3. Let’s Stay Together – Al Green
  4. You Make Loving Fun – Fleetwood Mac
  5. The Wonder of You - Villagers

Celebrating PAL-entines

The Look:

Our friends can be like our chosen family, so why not celebrate this Pal-entines with a friend date! You might want to get cosy in your sweats, but we’ve chosen a look that is comfortable enough to dance around the kitchen in, or perfect for going out to brunch in, too. Enter the Alison seed print midi skirt, which is floaty and comfortable and looks great teamed with a big jumper, or some lighter layers like this long sleeve organic cotton top and knitted vest for a stylish and sweet look that makes you feel special. Finish it with trainers or ankle boots and enjoy a day (or night), out with your friends.

Things To Do:

We think treating your friends is a perfect way to celebrate this time of year. Why not plan a brunch date at your local spot (one of our local favourites being No.1 Polsloe), head to a spa for a special pamper, do some exercise you enjoy together, like a hike or swim, or invite your friends over for a special dinner to show them how much you love them. If you’re doing the latter, we recommend checking out the Comfort Mob or One Pot Planet cookbooks for easy to recreate and delicious recipes, and you can’t beat a good cocktail or G&T to accompany a good natter.

The Gifts:

Giving your friends time, lending an ear, inviting them over, or planning a friend date means just as much if not more than any gift, but should you not have time immediately and want to show them a token until you can organise some quality time, check out our new stationery and cards, perfect for sending them some love!

  1. Dancing on My Own – Robyn
  2. Got To Give It Up – Marvin Gaye
  3. Single Ladies – Beyonce
  4. Kiss – Prince
  5. You Sexy Thing – Hot Chocolate

Taking Care of Your Main Squeeze – You

The Look:

Obviously, you could do or wear anything listed above alone and have just as much fun, but if you’re looking to practice some self-care with a soothing relax session, we recommend an outfit that’s cosy and comforting, but still makes you feel good in yourself. That’s why we chose our customer favourite Sasha Trousers – the smartest looking sweatpants we have ever seen, with a tailored fit and lovely weight (perfect for wearing out the house on down days as well as when staying in). We love them teamed with our best-selling Cody jumper, with a mock neck, slouchy fit and soft finish, and our recycled plastic bottle slippers with some fun sustainable socks to keep those toes extra toasty during this cold month!

Things To Do:

A solo cinema date, a nice meal out, a spa day, or dancing in the kitchen are all fantastic things to do by yourself, too! We also recommend a workout (whether that’s a nature walk, run, a dance class, or something entirely new to you), followed by a pamper session or long bath at home and some great food. We always find this feeds our souls and is a perfect way to practice a little self-love – with a mix of activities that help you take care of the inside, not just the out.

The Gifts:

We think treating yourself to some bits and bobs, like our gorgeous bath salts and beauty products, some ethical chocolate, some new cruelty-free nail polish, some sustainable undies or any other essential you’ve been considering for a while is a great way to show yourself a little love.

The Soundtrack:

There are a huge range of songs on our playlist that celebrate all forms of love, our Top 5 for enjoying while practising some self-care, whatever that looks like for you, are:

  1. I Feel It All – Feist
  2. Good As Hell – Lizzo
  3. Pressure to Party – Julia Jacklin
  4. Brown Skin Girl – Beyonce
  5. New Soul – Yael Naim

So that’s our guide to how to celebrate V-day, whichever way you choose how. What’s important though, is not just one day, but embracing and celebrating love, things, spaces, and the people that bring you joy as much as possible. Take some time to invest in the people around you, and yourself, enjoy some wholesome activities, listen to good music, and make sustainable choices as often as possible. This will mean the pressures of days like Valentines will be far less, no matter what your stance on them. We hope you find some simple ways to celebrate love this month.

Big love,

Sancho’s

Why understanding how to end racism is important to me.

Over the past 2 years, the public murder of George Floyd by police officer Derek Chauvin sparked international protest to raise awareness of and demand the addressing of the insidious nature of racism and inequality. So many times over the past two years I was asked (and expected) to deliver a response to what the ‘solution’ to racism was. At times I would even volunteer myself, driven through overall desperation for a better world and better life for myself and my peers.

I found this ask (whether presented to me or driven by me) deeply overwhelming. Becoming anxious to know the answer to every question, or depressed on the realisation that so few of the questions have readily available answers. Over time it became clear to me that unless I took the time to understand the foundations of racism, practically and in organisations today, I would not be able to speak on it clearly or effectively.

I also saw a pattern in the conversation I was having with my community. That pattern was to discuss how horrible racism was and to seek empathy and compassion to change it. It was a circular conversation with no real solution and every means to empower individuals in positions of power already causing harm.

Then last year, Devon County Council instructed Sandhya Dave and Maia Thomas and me to carry out a Race Equality Audit of its institution, in the hopes of identifying how it can address structural racism. This project provided a focused lens from which to look at racism in a critical, resourced, and outcome orientated way.

This journal entry looks at the findings of that report, how you can conduct an audit of your organisations yourself, and what we concluded was the effective way to END structural racism.

Read the report here

Disclaimer (context)

This is a disclaimer that this audit was conducted in 2021 for a Italy Public Body of a certain size and with the goals of ending racism is within this specific context. It is, of course, relevant to other work environments whether they’re smaller or bigger but it may not be relevant to all the instances of racism for example it doesn't address political racism, prisons, healthcare or immigration. As such please do not use it as a definitive way to end all instances of racism, instead, as you read on I hope you find that the process of conducting the audit to come up with the strategy to end racism within this context can be applied to other contexts as well, and encourage you to follow this methodology when critically reviewing your environment. with

Why ending racism is more important than understanding it

A clear distinction should be made between understanding racism to a commitment to ending racism. These two approaches are very different. Understanding racism (or understanding unconscious bias) looks at teaching White actors with power, influence, and resources to be more compassionate beings as though compassion is something that needs to be taught to adults with full agency over their own learning.

Ending racism looks at the accountability of individuals with power and resources and supports them in being more effective in creating safe and inclusive work environments whilst creating clear parameters for their potential failure in these spaces.

commitment to ending racism gives everybody much more specific objectives to work towards as well as measures to assess and understand whether or not change has been driven

What is structural racism (themes for modern work environment)

Structural racism is defined as the normalisation and legitimisation of an array of historical, cultural, institutional and interpersonal dynamics that routinely advantage White people while producing cumulative and chronic adverse outcomes for Black and Asian peoples.

Within the modern work environment, structural racism serves to sustain power, access and inclusion hierarchies in a way that favours white actors. Structural racism doesn't speak of the specific nature understanding or inherent goodness of any individual but instead speaks of how organisations are set up in a way that routinely supports one group over another.

Anybody with experience in most modern working environments will know that they can be set up in a way that rewards individuals of certain characteristics whether that be race gender income or are their social characteristics.

We address structural racism so that we may design organisations in a way that they routinely uplift individuals of diverse backgrounds to become inclusive safe and thriving working environments and as such are better able to serve the communities to which they belong.

What are the themes of structural racism?

Racism takes many shapes and forms from name-calling violence bullying and equality to deep-seated apathy bias's ignorance and cruelty. Leadership in many organisations claim to be working to address racism however studies show that the experiences of Black and Asian staff members throughout the country are that these efforts are not as effective as they could be. This points to the lack of an effective strategy in addressing inequality.

To be able to understand the themes that keep it in place these are

  1. The denial of racism
  2. The understanding that too few people of colour black and Asian people are present to be able to understand it in the first place
  3. White fragility in leadership
  4. Lack of sufficient strategy
  5. Unwelcoming culture for Black and Asian People

These themes serve to create hostile work environments that cannot critically review and improve themselves.

How to end racism, Culture and Consequences

The key to ending racism is to realise it is a balance between cultural change and consequences. Cultural change is required on many fronts, from being able to discuss racism, to creating spaces of psychological safety for all participants to inviting the growth of compassionate and authentic relationships based on mutual understanding and goodwill. However as it takes time for cultural change to be done well, a benchmark standard of accountability for dealing with race should also be created. This is where consequences come into play, consequences should range from opportunities for further learning to reprimands on an individual’s job role.

For the DCC what we found is that the following things are required in order to address racism

  • Evolving Culture; to include frequent, welcomed and easy conversations about race.
  • Grievance Management; provide very clear guidance on the process of investigating incidents of racial discrimination to all stakeholders within an organisation as well as very clear guidance on how that discrimination is managed and addressed. Coupled with the ability to review that process by the impacted people's at regular suitable intervals. Then Implement appropriate racial grievance channels, enabling staff to raise concerns independent of their direct reports or line managers. It is necessary for organisations to communicate that feedback is possible without consequences, particularly feedback that is interpersonal.
  • Diversity in Teams; Organisations employ diverse and skilled equality diversity and inclusion team members with demographic characteristics from the backgrounds they are required to represent. The key reason for this is because equality and diversity and inclusion is about lived experience. The organisation should also look at screening for potential racist characteristics of new hires through their recruitment processes.
  • Training; training should be available to everybody it shouldn't be kept for managers or directors or it shouldn't be expected of front workers without being expected of managers.
  • (Resourced) Equality Reverse Mentoring; Reverse mentoring programme so that leaders are given the opportunity to learn from critical and personal feedback from Black and Asian team members.

These recommendations are a summary of over 31 action points raised for the County Council. We encourage you to review all of the recommendations and come back and identify the ones that will make the biggest impact on your organisation.

    Read the report here

How to conduct your own audit

Please use these recommendations, and the wider recommendations of the report to generate ideas on how you can address racism within your workplace. However, we encourage you to conduct your own audit to see what the steps highlight for you.

Full Audit methodology can be found within the report.

    It should include

    • A review of relevant historic and current materials
    • Interviews with all stakeholders
    • Benchmarking against your industry
    • Draft of your recommendations
    • Feedback from stakeholders on the recommendations
    • Key performance indicators and
    • SMART strategy

    Why We Love Girlfriend Collective

Girlfriend Collective are not only one of the bestselling brands at Sancho’s, but also one of our favourites to stock. They promote inclusivity and conscious shopping through their ethically made active wear. Plus, their recycled PET Compressive High Rise Leggings have received some of our best reviews because of their soft, comfortable fit that stays up during exercise, allowing you to feel and perform at your best. We are diving deeper into how Girlfriend Collective activewear is made to tell you everything you need to know about the sustainable brand.

This process can result in some irregularities in the colours which means that they recommend washing your new leggings with similar colours first just in case they run.

    girlfriend-collective-recycled-PET-activewear

When you buy active wear from Girlfriend Collective you know that it is ethically made with care.

    girlfriend-collective-recycled-PET-activewear

This protects the wildlife that lives there.

    girlfriend-collective-recycled-PET-activewear

    Is Girlfriend Inclusive?

Girlfriend Collective stands out as a brand that takes inclusivity very seriously. They have done many things to show their customers that they care about them. Their product descriptions and adverts feature models with a range of sizes, ethnicities, ages, races, and skin-tones. Plus, many of their images feature models with stretch marks and skin conditions such as vitiligo. This shows that they want their brand to make everyone feel comfortable. 5 Black-Owned Brands to Gift this Christmas

As a Black-Owned brand, it's important to us that we support other Black-Owned businesses and do what we can to share them with you. We've recently found some wonderful new companies to add to our growing list of Black-Owned brands, and we want to show you five that we think are perfect for gifting this Christmas. Purchasing from and sharing Black-Owned businesses is the best way to support them, so shop consciously this season and keep scrolling for a little gift shopping inspiration...

    Baxter Wood : Recycled Outerwear

Baxter Wood is an American brand founded by Kweku and Sarah in 2018 after they witnessed the amount of unregulated plastic waste during a trip to Ghana, West Africa. Inspired to take meaningful steps to combat this, they decided to take post-consumer plastic bottles and planet friendly materials to make their fully waterproof Unisex Trawler Raincoats and natural-rubber rainboots, like these White-Sole Hevea Chelsea Boots in Black. With each raincoat diverting 22 bottles from landfill, all while creating a functional and timeless piece you or your loved ones will reach for every time it rains, we think one of these makes the perfect Christmas present for that special someone.

Manicure You : Toxin-Free Nail Varnish

Manicure You was founded by Nicola in 2018 in London. Nicola started with an aim to offer luxury with affordability and was passionate to create a product that is inclusive for all skin tones, toxin-free and healthier for your nails. Alongside an inclusive range of neutrals, Manicure You also offers gorgeous fashion-led and seasonal colours. The formulas are free from the ten major toxins found in regular nail polish, and the precision brush and high shine will leave you with a professional looking finish. The perfect stocking filler or gift for a friend, the only trouble you’ll have is choosing from our great range of colours!

Our Lovely Goods : Soy Wax Candles

Our Lovely Goods founders Ebi and Emmanuel wanted to create their business as an extension of them and their home. Believing home should be a safe, relaxing, and nurturing environment, they embarked on creating luxury scented candles and skincare to help cultivate just that. Inspired by their Nigerian Heritage, delighting the senses, gathering family, and having a laid-back approach to life is the common thread running through everything they do. With candles such as ‘A Quiet Moment,’ ‘Sunday Morning,’ and ‘The Old Library,’ these gorgeously scented candles make a great gift, giving the receiver a sense of comfort and calm. All the candles are made in small-batches using eco-friendly cotton wicks and 100% natural soy wax, and their skincare lines are natural, too, so these luxury-feeling gifts don’t cost the earth.

          Tanaka: Soaps
Tanaka was founded by Leonara Manyangadze in 2019. Tanaka is a Zimbabwean Shona name meaning ‘we are good,’ which is the driving mission of Leonara’s brand. Making bars of soap that help benefit skin health as well as boost mood, they also reduce plastic waste, and are wrapped in compostable Glassine-Paper. Tanaka bars are made with a unique blend of butters and oils so they are moisturising, and only contain natural ingredients such as Spirulina, Pink Clay and Charcoal, making each bar suitable for different skin types. With formulas rooted in nature, the bars are processed using the cold method and then cured for 6 weeks. We think these make a great stocking-filler, token gift or secret Santa as they look and smell great as well as being a useful present.

     Liha : Candles & Skincare
Liha beauty was founded by Liha and Abi, two university friends who wanted to create natural skincare that mixed their African roots with a British attitude. It is a Nigerian tradition to learn the making of beautifying oils, soaps and lotions from the nuts, tree bark and plants that are in abundance as a young woman, and with an English aromatherapist mother, Liha wanted to combine the two disciplines. While Abi was travelling the world as an athlete, she would collect ingredients, including Nigerian Shea, and so, Liha the brand, was born...Creating luxe, organic and vegan skincare and the beautifully scented Queen Idia candles that represent female empowerment and are made with a coconut wax blend, cotton wicks and reusable glass containers, why not treat someone to the Discovery Gift Set which combines the two, or pick up a candle for a stocking filler that will bring a sensory delight to your recipient.

https://mycafelatte.com/blogs/news/what-is-transparent-pricing-and-how-can-it-help-make-sustainable-fashion-more-inclusive 2021-10-25T15:14:53+01:00 2021-10-25T15:14:53+01:00 What is transparent pricing and how can it help make sustainable fashion more inclusive? Kalkidan Legesse More

    ]]>

Sancho’s is the home of sustainable fashion and ethical lifestyle products. Our Black woman owned business is based in Genova, Italy where we believe in doing better, providing sustainable and affordable clothing options. Through activism and spreading awareness, we are working towards a kinder world.

    What is transparent pricing?

At Sancho's Transparent Pricing Is A Method of Selling That Enables To Pay What They Can Afford. They Can Shop 3 price options with our 'Transparent Pricing Collection.' The lowest price covers just the cost of the item and shipping, the middle price covers the above and our overheads such as the shop and staff wages, and the top price covers all of the above with a bit more to invest into the future of Sancho’s so we can continue to provide the products you love.

Why is transparency important in sustainable fashion?

According to the State of Fashion Report 2019, there has been an awakening of consumers demanding brands to provide information supporting their claims about transparency and sustainability. Transparency has been playing a key role with consumers increasingly concerned about fair labor, sustainable sourcing, and the environment. Transparency helps to tackle disinformation and empowers customers to make informed decisions about what they wish to own, and how they wish to impact industries.

Why is Transparent Pricing important to Sancho's?

We want to meet all of our customers are a price point they can afford, whilst being open about how we operate. Price transparency consists of breaking down the costs of the item and what is involved to put the product together, including production, transportation, maintenance costs, staff, research and design. In this way, consumers can make informed choices. The truth is sustainable fashion costs more to make, being open about this allows customers to make a choice about how much they are willing to pay. However we all have different budgets and for some the price of sustainable fashion as it is is not accessible.

For this reason we want to see more transparent pricing within sustainable fashion.

5 Ways To Make Sustainable Fashion More Accessible

    With Transparent Pricing

    1. Multiple price points increase affordability

Our Transparent Pricing collections provide 3 price points for each of the products included. You can then choose which price to pay. For most of us Affordability is not a fixed reality but instead something that changed regularly depending on what else is happening in our lives. As a sustainable fashion business we want to recognise this and address it head on. Instead of simply saying 'It cost more to make sustainable fashion than fast fashion therefore it is more expensive' and leaving it at that. We want to say, although it costs more to produce, making products only accessible to the relatively affluent will cause discrepancies that are not desirable for our brand.

    2. Price Transparency communicates how sustainable fashion and business operate

Not everyone knows the ins and outs of the fashion industry. For example some will be surprised to know that Luxury fashion is not always more expensive because of the quality of materials or process, but because of brand value and margins. In fact, a huge proportion of Luxury products are made in the same conditions as fast fashion businesses. By showing really clearly what prices make up an item, customers can see how their money is being spent, and make a decision as to how important it is for them that garment workers are paid well, or that the materials used are created using environmentally sound processes.

    3. Price Transparency enables those who have more resources to make sustainable products more affordable to those who have fewer resources

One of the biggest obstacles to transforming the fashion industry, and other to make them more sustainable is that the heaviest burden is placed on the poor. Consider if you want to have solar panels on your roof to reduce your homes demand on fossil fuels, or if you want to purchase an electric car to invest in green travel, you can expect to pay £10,000's. These costs are impossible for most.

A question I ask myself often is how can we distribute the resources of the wealthy to tackle climate change? Transparent pricing on sustainably produced products give those with more resources and opportunity to create accessible price points for those with fewer resources.

    4. Price Transparency can challenge greenwashing from fast fashion brands

Greenwashing is a growing problem within the fashion industry. Fast fashion brands are repositioning themselves as sustainable by releasing small conscious collections whilst continuing with their business models (which extract more from the planet than they return and rely on impoverished labour). In comparison to a mass produced conscious collection from a multinational retailers, products from small sustainable brands can seem expensive and struggle to compete. Price transparency invites customers to question why some products in the sustainable sphere are priced as equivalents to fast fashion and others not. The answer is more often than not greenwashing.

    5. Transparent Pricing can enable people to shop less in the long term

Well made, well loved products last. By investing in sustainable products customers can reduce how often they need to replace products in their wardrobe and embrace a slower approach to shopping.

    The Autumn Edit

Autumn is here and we couldn't be happier about it. The low sun, changing leaves and the opportunity to layer up are just a few things we love about the season. In an effort to embrace all that, we've curated some of our very favourite looks from our new collection that prove comfort doesn't have to compromise on style. With sumptuous textures of corduroy, knitwear and soft jersey, all made from organic materials, we love the mix of Autumnal tones with neutrals. We want to show you how dressing up for the crisp outdoors can be just as comforting as cosying up inside...

Florence can be seen here wearing the beautiful Claudette Floral Wrap Dress in Green, with the Rishima Merino Jumper in Green and Leaf Drop Earrings.

We love dresses layered with base layers such as the Laila Roll Neck, some chunky socks and a gorgeous scarf to see us through Autumn...

Textures of Corduroy, Denim and Knitwear scream Autumn and provide comfort while creating an interesting look.

I don’t know about you, but I loved the Netflix series ‘tidying up with Marie Kondo’, I may have even re-watched the series several times over the multiple lockdowns as it was perfect inspiration as I moved to a new house and organised my new space. Marie Kondo’s new series ‘Sparking Joy’ takes the concept further to enrich the spaces we live and work in. From spending more time in our homes, to now moving back into the workplace and out and about more, we can use Marie Kondo’s principles to find out what our core principles are, and how to move into a future that sparks joy and is more sustainable too! Here are my 5 tips to using Marie Kondo’s ethos to live more sustainably.

    1. De-Clutter (And Re-Home)

De-cluttering can be great way to start a new chapter in your life, you re-consider what you have and if it adds value. We often think ‘well there’s no harm in keeping this’ but every item we keep needs storing, moving, cleaning and maintaining, meaning it costs to keep it. Marie suggests you start with your clothing, remember to thank your clothing when it no longer serves a purpose for you and give it a new life by donating it or sell it on Shwap. When you are sorting through your possessions, ask yourself what you want to take into your future? Can you see this item as being a valuable part of your future? What value does it add? This may have changed over the global pandemic, as many of our lives have changed in myriad ways!

    2. Find Your Joy Items

After de-cluttering you should look at your clothing and know what key pieces sparked joy. These are really important, to have a few items that you really love, are right for the season in your life, fit you and you are excited to wear! Now analyse these pieces, why do you love them? Is there a commonality between them? Are they bright and colourful, or more muted tones? Are they all super comfortable or made from natural fibres? Understanding your style and what your favourite pieces are will give you confidence in the future when shopping for items and investing in pieces you know you will love and look after for years to come. Loved clothes, last!

    3. Take Care of Your Clothes

Marie Kondo has a famous folding method for clothes, which is practical as well as beautiful! The idea is that you are able to see all your clothing, by folding clothing and placing them in your drawer upright, things don’t get lost under other items, and your drawers don’t get messy because you don’t have to pull everything out! Her method also means you get less lines and wrinkles on your clothing, reducing the need for ironing, which means less electricity use and a smaller carbon footprint! If you want to take caring for your clothing a step further to be more sustainable – wash everything at 30 degrees, use an organic, non-toxic laundry liquid, and air dry everything.

Top tip – dry all shirts on a hanger and reshape whilst damp – you’ll be surprised how many don’t need any ironing at all!

    4. Live with intent

Going through your belongings can put your intentions into perspective. One of my main goals at the moment is to live with intent, meaning that whatever I do, I try and do for a reason. This may seem simple, but you would be surprised how many things you do that you’re not sure why you do it, such as scrolling on your phone, sleeping till midday on the weekends or holding onto books or projects you feel like you ‘should’ finish which end up making you feel guilty whenever you see them. I believe being more mindful and intentional about how I live my life, makes it more sustainable, because I don’t waste time on things that aren’t beneficial to me or the planet, instead I focus on enjoying the small things that make a big difference.

    5. Your connection with your clothing

A deeper connection with your clothing, and understanding of who made it, what fibres it’s made from and what it brings to your life will make you a smarter and more sustainable shopper going forwards. The more we understand about our clothing and connect it to the immense skill and labour gone into its creation, the more we’ll enjoy taking care of it and wearing it over and over again! This is sustainable style, a style that is filled with connection and appreciation. You can use these principles across everything you own, and in time you’ll find you need less to live a fulfilling life, making your impact on the earth smaller and your connection to your life, stronger!

We are so excited to introduce you to our new dungarees, ethically made to be incredibly comfortable, flattering and timeless! Here’s 5 things you should know about our own brand dungarees, because we know you’re going to live in them!

    1. They’re made locally to us in Devon

Yes! Our dungarees have been produced locally to our Genova HQ in Cullompton, by a factory that makes small batches of items for independent makers! We’re so pleased we get to make our dungarees here, because it reduces the environmental footprint of the item, PLUS it means we have much better communication with the wonderful makers! Shout out to Theresa & co for doing such a great job.

    2. Inclusively sized from Italy 6 - 22

If you’ve been following our journey for a while, you’ll know that ethical fashion can sometimes be behind on making clothing inclusive for all body types. We’ve been on the lookout for more inclusive brands, and whilst we’ve found some beautiful brands to stock, we thought we’d just make our own line! Our dungarees come in Italy sizes 6 – 22, don’t see your size? Get in touch and we’ll make a note to add it to our next batch of making! Simply email us at [email protected].

    3. They have adjustable straps

The adjustable straps on our dungarees make them more adjustable for everyone to get the perfect fit! There is definitely no ‘one size fits all’, all bodies are beautifully unique, so making clothing adjustable is a step to making them look and feel great on as many people as possible.

    4. Made from Organic Cotton and Bamboo fabric

Our dungarees have been made by an Organic Cotton and Bamboo mix fabric, making them a super soft and stretchy natural fabric! This means you can wash it as much as you like and no microplastics will be shed, plus once it’s been worn out, you can throw it in the compost bin and it will naturally decompose without releasing all that harmful gases that are heating up our planet.

    5. Built to be a Versatile, Staple Item!

We know that our customers don’t look for items they will only wear a couple of times, sustainable clothing means wearing it at least 30 times. Our dungaree’s have been designed with versatility in mind to make them a staple in your wardrobe! You can layer your Sancho’s dungarees with a T-shirt and sandals in the summer months or with a chunky jumper, oversized cardigan or long sleeve roll neck top in the cooler months, to keep you toasty without compromising on comfort and style.

We hope you love our dungarees as much as we do, you can shop them now in our ‘Back to Basic’s’ collection filled with staple pieces, ethically made from natural materials to help build your dream sustainable wardrobe you’ll love for years to come.

September is here, and autumn is around the corner, meaning that we can go from a warm sunny afternoon to a chilly evening with no warning, and dressing for the season becomes increasingly difficult. In this blog I'll share my top 5 ways to style your wardrobe for the changing seasons and how to make the most out of your favourite items!

    1. Layer with Thin Layers

Thin layers are a great way to prepare for a chilly breeze without wrapping up and over heating! Our new Edie Rib Top in Cream is the perfect thin layer you can pair with your favourite denim jacket, over shirt or unbutton it over a cami top! This versatile piece is great for the transitioning seasons, and it's a soft and snuggly base layer for when winter is here too. Layer it under our new Coco Romper in light summer denim for a super cute look!

    2. Use Versatile Staples

Versatile staples are the key pieces in your wardrobe that you adore, that can be worn over and over again in multiple ways. Our new Brooklyn Twill Dungarees in Natural are super flattering, versatile and perfect for autumn styling! They can be worn with just a T-shirt and a light jacket for this mild weather, and when it gets cooler you can pair it with a roll neck top or even your favourite woollen and a pair of boots. You can style our best selling Oliana jumpsuit in a similar way, plus you can dress it up for formal events!

    3. Now’s the Time for Shirts

I don't know about you, but I love a good detailed shirt, but in the summer months it's a bit too warm and by the time autumn hits you really have to layer up, so now is the perfect time for wearing a detailed shirt, be it puff sleeves, button detailing or ruffles like on our new Alix Striped Blouse in off white! This looks gorgeous paired with our new Alexis Tapered Trousers in Natural that will quickly become your new favourite trousers!

    4. Base Layers

Wearing versatile & comfortable base layers is key to transitional seasons. Our new Girlfriend collection includes pieces in the 'Float' fabric which is a more lightweight, breathable and everyday fabric, making the Girlfriend range a lovely option for everyday leggings and bras. The Cleo Bra in Black is longer than other sports bras, making it the perfect crop top/bralette you can simply pair with a cardigan, and a pair of high waisted trousers. For a cosy outfit, pair the Float Leggings in Black with an oversized sweatshirt such as our Straight Sweater in Stem Green - perfect for everyday comfort.

    5. Put Comfort First

Importantly, you enjoy your clothes most when they make you feel good, and are super comfortable to wear! That's one of the reasons all our clothing is made from super soft natural fibres, or high quality recycled materials. The Winnie Wrap Short Sleeve Jumpsuit in Rust Linen is a standout piece that was built to be a comfortable, timeless classic! You can dress it up or down, but it is always sure to make you feel incredible. Pair it with our best selling customer favourite, the Lizzi hair pin, for an effortless look.

By now, many of us are familiar with the issue of plastic waste. We have only recycled 10% of all the plastic ever created. The rest of it is sitting in landfill or floating in the sea. And while we are doing our best to avoid single use plastic, and switch to renewable products where we can, our clothing is still a big source of the issue. Synthetic fabrics like polyester, nylon, acrylic and lycra are all, like plastic, made from crude oil. Whilst there are benefits to using these fabrics, recent research has taught us that when we wash these fabrics, tiny microfibers are shed into the water, then subsequently washed out to sea.

Why is there plastic in our clothing?

Plastic plays a very practical role in making our clothing comfortable, stretchier, and more affordable. Most denim jeans now contain elastane to help them fit better, those skinny jeans would be near impossible to wriggle into without it. Polyester has been added to cotton shirts to make them easier to iron. Other elastics like spandex are mixed into our activewear fabrics to help them stretch, providing comfort when you move. Plastic threads are often used to stitch together denim fabrics as it’s a much stronger alternative to regular cotton thread. The addition of plastic to our clothes has undoubtedly made our lives easier, and more comfortable.

Why is plastic in our clothing bad?

With 60% of fast fashion clothing currently made using plastics, it’s not surprising that microplastics have been discovered in oceans all over the world. Fashion accounts for a third of microplastic pollution. More worryingly, microplastics have also been discovered in the fish we eat and in stool samples. We are unwittingly eating and drinking the microfibers that shed from our clothes when we wash them. Of course, plastic isn’t something we should be ingesting and there is evidence that it can cause long term damage to our health and the health of marine life.

Plastic mixed into our clothing also makes it harder to recycle fabrics. When fibres are mixed, recycling is tricky. For example, denim made with elastane is harder to recycle than pure cotton denim, like these Armed Angels jeans. There isn’t much infrastructure in the world currently to do the job successfully. Items that cannot be recycled usually end up in landfill or shipped to second hand markets in the Global South.

    What are regenerated plastic fabrics?

As we innovate towards sustainability, regenerated nylon fibres such as ECONYL ® yarn and other recycled PET fabrics have become popular. Sancho’s selection of recycled materials has some great options. ECONYL ® yarn for example is created using abandoned ghost fishing nets that cause environmental issues when left behind by fishing boats. ECONYL ® is not only an amazing fabric which makes high performance swimwear, it’s also infinitely recyclable, meaning it can be kept in a loop without going to landfill or back to oceans. For every 10,000 tons of ECONYL ® raw material made, 70,000 barrels of crude oil is saved. It also reduces the global warming impact of nylon by up to 90% compared with the material from oil.

What can you do to avoid micro plastic shedding?

However, washing these regenerated fabrics also causes microplastic shedding. So whilst regenerated fabrics are much better for the environment than virgin synthetics, it’s important to wash your clothes carefully to avoid microplastics getting into the water. Of course washing your clothes less is a good place to start. Airing your clothes removes odours in place of washing. However as regenerated fabrics are most often used to create activewear and sportswear, washing our clothes is often unavoidable. In which case, there are several solutions to help reduce micro fibre shedding in your washing machine.

    Add them to your wash

A Guppy Friend Bag or a Coraball are both great places to start. Throw the Coraball in with your clothes, or pop synthetic fabrics inside the Guppy Friend Bag before adding it to your machine. Both work by catching microplastics and capturing them, avoiding them ending up in the waste water that will then find its way into our seas. Simply remove the debris caught in the ball or bag and pop it in the bin. Whilst it isn’t a perfect solution, it does a good job at keeping plastic out of the ocean.

    Use a filter

If you prefer a more heavy duty approach, then filters are now available to add to your washing machine. Girlfriend Collective, the amazing activewear brand which specialises in using regenerated fabrics, now offer their own filter. Simply attach the water filter to your washing machine and clear it out every few washes. Filtrol is another company that offers a do-it-yourself filter option. It’s important to check that your machine is compatible and be aware that additional materials are needed to successfully fit the devices to your washing machine.

    Choose natural fibre

Whilst it’s not always possible, choosing natural fabrics is by far the easiest way to deal with microplastic shedding. Fabrics such as organic cotton, linen and bamboo are naturally moisture wicking and temperature regulating, making them ideal to work out in. Wool and silk are also much softer than polyester imitations, and won’t cause your body to overheat.
